Heavy duty starts above twenty-six thousand pounds gross: semi tractors, loaded and empty trailers, dump trucks, buses and full-size motorhomes. These jobs are decided before the truck leaves the yard , not on arrival, because the wrong truck at a heavy scene is an expensive hour for everyone. The more you can tell dispatch on the first call, the fewer surprises there are at the roadside.

What We Need Before A Heavy Job
Gross weight, as best you know it
Tractor alone, tractor and trailer, loaded or empty. A bobtail tractor and the same tractor under a loaded van trailer are two different recoveries and two different trucks.
Height, length and access
Overpass clearance, the width of the shoulder, whether it is on a ramp and whether there is room to set up. A scene with nowhere to rig is a slower scene regardless of what arrives.
Does it roll and steer
Air brakes that will not release, a locked-up drive axle, a damaged steer axle or a unit that has left the pavement all change the method. Say which one it is.
Is there a load, and is it secure
A shifted or unsecured load has to be dealt with before anything moves, and hazardous freight changes who else needs to be on scene before we touch it.
Recovery Is Not The Same As A Tow
A tow is a unit that still rolls, hooked and driven away. A recovery is everything else : a unit off the pavement, on its side, jackknifed, or with a load that has moved. Recovery takes rigging, time and usually more than one piece of equipment, and it is priced on what the scene actually needs rather than on a flat number.
That is why nobody honest quotes a heavy recovery sight unseen. What you get on the phone is what we know so far and what would change it. If the scene is different when we arrive, you hear the revised number before work starts rather than on the invoice.

On Scene, Before Anything Moves
If anyone is injured, or a lane is blocked, call 911 first — then call us. On a highway a heavy unit usually means law enforcement is involved before we are, and a lane closure has to be in place before rigging starts. Stay out of the travel lane and out of the space behind the unit.
Have the unit number, the registration and the name of whoever authorizes the move. On a company truck the driver often is not the person who can approve the work, and finding that out at two in the morning is what turns a two hour job into a four hour one.

What actually counts as heavy duty?
Above twenty-six thousand pounds gross vehicle weight. Semi tractors, loaded and empty trailers, dump trucks, concrete mixers, transit and school buses, and full-size motorhomes. Between ten and twenty-six thousand is medium duty, which is box trucks and work vans, and that is a different truck again.
Do you have to drop the driveline or cage the brakes?
It depends how the unit is being taken and how far. A drive axle that stays on the road with the driveline connected can be damaged over distance, and air brakes that will not release have to be caged or the wheels will not turn at all. Both are normal parts of a heavy job and both take time on scene.
Can you move a loaded trailer?
Tell us the freight and roughly what it weighs when you call. A loaded trailer is a different job from an empty one, and if the load has shifted it may have to be secured or transferred before anything is moved. Hazardous freight brings other people into the decision before we touch it.
How is a recovery priced?
On what the scene needs: the equipment, the rigging and the hours. That is why you get a considered figure on the phone from what you describe, and a revised one before work begins if the scene turns out different. Nothing gets decided quietly and billed afterwards.
